The City of Toronto

Toronto is the largest city in Canada and one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Located on the northern shore of Lake Ontario, it combines a layered history with the energy of a modern global metropolis, shaped by waves of migration and cultural exchange.

The area has been inhabited for thousands of years by Indigenous peoples, including the Anishinaabe, Haudenosaunee and Wendat Nations. Over time, Toronto evolved into a key gateway to Canada and today plays a central role in the country’s economic, cultural and academic life.

CN Tower

The city’s skyline is dominated by the CN Tower, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world, offering panoramic views over the city and Lake Ontario.

Nearby, the downtown core and waterfront, including Harbourfront Centre, illustrate Toronto’s transformation from an industrial port into a contemporary urban centre with public spaces, cultural venues and pedestrian promenades.

Other places not to be missed include the Distillery Historic District, a well-preserved 19th-century industrial complex now animated by galleries, cafés and cultural events; the historic St. Lawrence Market area; and the lively neighbourhoods of Kensington Market and Chinatown, where narrow streets, independent shops, street art and global cuisines reflect the city’s everyday life.

Toronto is also home to major cultural institutions such as the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO), both internationally recognized for their collections and architecture. Extensive green spaces, including High Park and the city’s ravine system, provide opportunities for walking, relaxation and outdoor recreation within the urban environment.

Just offshore, the Toronto Islands offer beaches, walking paths and memorable views back toward the city skyline, while a visit naturally invites pauses to enjoy Toronto’s diverse food culture in markets, cafés and restaurants across the city.

With an efficient public transportation system and compact, walkable central areas, Toronto is easy to explore. During the conference period, visitors can expect pleasant seasonal weather, making it an ideal time to experience the city’s heritage, culture and vibrant daily rhythm.
