For more than 50 years, Living and Learning in Retirement (LLIR) has enriched the lives of retirees through continued education—while also making a lasting impact on students at York University’s Glendon College.
What began as an initiative to offer retirees a chance to continue their education and learning has grown into a remarkable fundraising community that has raised nearly $500,000 in the past decade to help students achieve their academic goals.
LLIR, a non-profit organization, provides a unique opportunity for seniors, aged 60 to 95, to engage in university-level lectures without the pressures of exams or grades. Instead, the focus is on lifelong learning and building a strong social network for retirees. The program offers a range of subjects, from history and art to emerging topics like artificial intelligence, ensuring there is something for every curious mind.
LLIR chose Glendon College as its home more than 50 years ago, drawn by the campus’s unique blend of academic atmosphere, accessible facilities, and a strong sense of community.
At the time, Fridays were often underused in university schedules, making Glendon’s lecture halls available for LLIR’s programming. Over the decades, the partnership has deepened. With lecture spaces that suit their needs and a campus culture that welcomes them, Glendon has become more than just a venue — it’s a second home. But LLIR’s influence doesn’t stop at education. Over the past 11 years, the organization has consistently raised significant funds for Glendon students. This year alone, more than $35,000 was generated through direct fundraising from LLIR members, which will support bursaries for students, allowing them to pursue their studies without the burden of financial stress.
“The sense of giving back is what makes LLIR so special,” said Bill Pashby, a long-time LLIR volunteer. “It’s incredibly rewarding to know that the money we raise helps students achieve their dreams, even though we may never meet them. It’s about creating a legacy for future generations.” The impact of LLIR’s work is also reflected in its volunteer-driven model. With over 1,200 members, the organization runs on the efforts of dedicated volunteers who help organize classes and events, ensuring the program remains vibrant and sustainable.
“We have a great team of people who are passionate about keeping this program alive,” Pashby says. “It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that so many people are committed to making it work.”
Looking to the future, LLIR is setting its sights on raising $25,000 next year. With its deep ties to Glendon College and its commitment to fostering lifelong learning, LLIR remains a cornerstone of the Glendon College community, proving that lifelong learning and giving go hand-in-hand.
With every lecture and every gift, LLIR’s members continue to shape Glendon’s future — ensuring the next generation can learn and thrive.
