This presentation places those patterns of rights in conversation, and focuses on ways in which twentieth-century Brazilians who were Black made claims in a context of negative rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/Registration Link: https:\/\/yorku.zoom.us\/meeting\/register\/tJ0rduqhrzgoGtAlNbc8DgNDQblJoHASn_Vx#\/registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">To register<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jerry D\u00e1vila<\/strong> is the Jorge Paulo Lemann Chair in Brazilian History and Executive Director of the <em>Illinois Global Institute<\/em> at UIUC. D\u00e1vila\u2019s research focuses on the influence of racial thought and social movements on public policy in Brazil. He is the author of <em>Hotel Tr\u00f3pico: Brazil and the Challenge of African Decolonization<\/em> (Duke, 2010), <em>Diploma of Whiteness: Race and Public Policy in Brazil<\/em> (Duke, 2003), and <em>Dictatorship in South America<\/em> (Wiley, 2013), and also co-authored <em>A History of World Societies<\/em>, 12th ed. (Bedford-St. Martin\u2019s, 2021).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This event is organized in partnership with the University of Toronto Latin American Studies Program and York's CERLAC.
