How do I import Quiz Questions to Moodle from a word processor?

It is possible to import true or false and multiple choice questions into Moodle from a word processor. The document has to adhere to the Aiken format.

Formatting the document to Aiken Format

1. Write your questions in a word-processing application (e.g., MS Word) or a text editor such as Notepad (Windows) or Text Edit (Mac OS X), and format as follows:

  • The question must be contained in one line (no pressing enter or CRLF command).
  • Each answer must start with a single uppercase letter, followed by a period "." or a right parenthesis ")", then a space.
  • The answer line must immediately follow starting with "ANSWER: " (with a space after the colon, in English - REPONSE will not work) and then give the letter for the correct answer.  Note: The word "ANSWER" and the answer letters (A,B,C etc.) must be capitalized as shown below, otherwise the import will fail.
  • Known issues arise from the use of single or double quotes within the question itself - this is not a guarantee of a failed import, however.

If you are using Word, use  "Save As" and save your questions as a .txt (plain text) file in UTF-8 format.

Example:

Import Questions into the Moodle Question Bank

Once you have saved your text file, you can import your questions into the Moodle Question Bank . You may wish to categorize the question bank so that you can separate questions out for different quizzes, otherwise they will all be placed in the root of the course folder, possibly hindering the navigation process. If you're only going to do one quiz or a final exam, skip until step 4:

  1. to create a new category, log into Moodle and open the course into which you would like to add questions.
  2. click "Settings", then "Question Bank", and finally "Categories":
  3. From there, expand "Add a Category" and select the root category you wish to add the subcategory to, then give it a name:
  4. If not already done, log into Moodle and open the course into which you would like to add questions.
  5. On your course page, select  1) Settings , then  2) question bank, and finally 3) import.
  6. Select the Aiken file format:
  7. Choose your *.txt file by clicking Choose a file (you must then populate the popup window with parameters) or dragging the file into the field.
  8. Press Import.
  9. Any errors will appear in the summary page, otherwise the file will import. If you wish to import the file regardless of errors, under the General  tab in the Import questions from file, select Stop on error - no

Use the questions in your quiz:

To add the questions from the database to your quiz:

  1. Add a quiz activity if not already done.
  2. Click on the quiz itself:
  3. Click on "Edit quiz":
  4. It may make sense to change the Maximum Grade to 100 (from the default 10) rather than doing it later. Click on Add and select from question bank:
  5. The Add from question bank window will appear. In it, select your category (if applicable) and then select the question(s) you want to import. It is possible to select them all by clicking on the checkbox above the first question:
  6. At the bottom of the form, click on Add selected questions to the quiz.
  7. The imported questions will appear in your test.
  8. For multiple-choice question cases where "all of the above" or "none of the above" need to appear as the last choice, the do not shuffle questions option must be selected.
  9. To do this and set other test parameters, edit the test (course activity page -> turn editing on -> edit icon -> Edit settings) under the heading Question behaviour: Shuffle within questions should indicate No.
