Why You Need a SIN
A Social Insurance Number is required to:
- Work in Canada
- Access government benefits and services
Your study permit must include a condition allowing you to work, such as:
“May accept employment on or off campus if meeting eligibility criteria as per R186(f), (v), or (w).”
Required Documents
To apply for, confirm, or amend your SIN, you must present original documents. Electronic copies (e.g., photos or scans) will not be accepted.
Please bring:
- Original Study Permit or Work Permit
Must state that you “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada - Original Passport or Canadian Government-Issued Photo ID
(e.g., Ontario Driver’s License)
Important Notes
- Eligibility to Work: Before starting employment, verify your eligibility to work on or off campus. For questions, contact an International Student Advisor & Immigration Specialist.
- Missing Work Conditions on Study Permit:
- If your permit lacks the necessary condition but you meet the criteria, you can request an amendment to your study permit.
- If you weren't eligible to work when your study permit was issued, but you are now, you should apply for a study permit extension. You will have to explain in your application that you are now eligible and want to have a condition allowing you to work on your new study permit.
Once your updated permit is issued, you may apply for a SIN.
