Tax Support Offerings for International Students

International students can access two dedicated services designed to help you understand Canadian tax requirements and successfully file your taxes for the 2026 tax filing year. These offerings are provided in partnership with the North York Community House. 

  1. Tax Information Session 

This session is designed for international students who want to learn whether they need to file taxes in Canada, understand their eligibility, or learn more about the filing process. Tax experts will provide a clear overview of your responsibilities and answer your questions. 

Date and Time: 

  • Tuesday, March 3rd, 2026 
  • 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM 
  • Online via Zoom 

Registration: Please complete the registration form to attend. 

  1. Virtual Tax Filing Appointments 

If you require one-on-one support to file your taxes, free virtual (phone call) appointments are available for eligible international students. 

Appointment Format: 

  • 40 minutes for individuals 
  • 1 hour for couples 

Eligibility Criteria: International students who worked in 2025 may qualify if their annual income is: 

  • Below $35,000 for individuals 
  • Below $45,000 for couples 

Clinic Dates: BY APPOINTMENT ONLY 

  • March 9th , 10th  and 16th  
  • 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

All appointments will take place over a phone call.

Required Documents for Tax Filing Appointment: Please ensure the following documents are prepared before your scheduled appointment 

General 
  • Your most recent Notice of Assessment (Not applicable if this is your first time filing taxes) 
  • Your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and, if applicable, your spouse’s SIN 
  • Individual Tax Number (ITN) - (ONLY necessary if you do not have a Social Insurance Number) 
  • Your Passport and Study Permit 
  • Direct deposit Information (Can be found online or your mobile banking app) 
Information Slips (please bring all documents that apply to you): 
  • T4 Form– Salary and wages (issued by your employer) 
  • T4A Form– Scholarships, bursaries (issued by University) 
Rent costs - Calculate your rent for the period of January 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025 - The receipt or signed letter from landlord/subletter are needed). It must include: 
  • The address you lived at (including postal code) in 2025; 
  • Person full name living in the above address; 
  • How many month(s)/year(s) you lived in that address(s) in 2025; 
  • How much rent you have paid in 2025; 
  • The name of the landlord/subletter that you rented it from  
  • Please note: You should get a letter/receipt from your landlord/ subletter confirming the above, in case CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) audits you in the future 
Medical expenses  For prescriptions, a printout can be obtained from your pharmacy 
T3 or T5 forms  If you earned interest on investments and deposits (issued by banking and financial institutions) 
Donation receipts  If you made any Canadian registered charitable donations during the period of January 1 - December 31, 2025

Those who have tax slips such as T4, T4A, T5…etc. with income limits as shown in table 2 
Students with Tuition fees paid receipt or Bursaries/Scholarships receipt 
Those who are on social assistance 
Newcomers

One person: $35,000 
Two persons: $45,0001 
Three persons: $ 47,5002 
Four persons: $50,0003 
Five persons: $52,500 

  

Table 3: PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR THIS SERVICE 
Those who are self-employed or have employment expenses 
Those who have business or rental income and expenses 
Those who have filed for bankruptcy 
Those who are completing a tax return for a deceased person
