Creating Digital Online Publications with Scalar

Creating Digital Online Publications with Scalar Online

Presenter: Denise Challenger

The Open Access Web Platform Workshops, presented by York University graduate students in partnership with York University Library’s Digital Scholarship Centre, offer an introduction to free open access web platforms StoryMapJS, TimelineJS, and Scalar. These platforms, which are compatible with each other, enable interactive digital storytelling and research that can take your work where it needs to go—in the community, online, in presentations, in the classroom, in the lab, and beyond. This workshop is the second of two in a series, but you are not required to take both!

Gain introductory user knowledge on digitally documenting, archiving, and visualizing community-facing projects through the open-source Scalar publishing platform. Join PhD candidates Sarah York-Bertram and Denise Challenger as they share their process of building and adapting Scalar for their respective Graduate Assistant projects.

York-Bertram works with the Conjugal Slavery in War partnership, developing a Scalar project as a companion to the “Ododo Wa: Stories of Girls in War” traveling exhibit to support community dialogues about survivor-centred justice and reparations. Denise Challenger’s “Playin’ Mas, Play and Mas: A Pedagogical Journey of Children in Caribana” project features the personal photos of Kenneth Shah and emerges from an experiential learning project supported by the Office of Vice Provost Academic York University, the Harriet Tubman Institute for Research on Africa and its Diasporas, and York University Libraries. Both Scalar projects engage with the topics and experiences of children and youth. This workshop shares user functions available in Scalar such as media annotation and narrative organization, both of which support engaging civic commitment and community collaboration. This workshop supports participants through accessing their own Scalar project and builds on the Knight Lab workshop (participants do not have to attend the Knight Lab workshop to attend the Scalar workshop).

This workshop is presented as part of Open Access Week, with the support of the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
