PENNY is a firecracker of a girl, nine years old and ready to take on the world. She struggles to be 'one of the guys' and in the process she finds herself having to constantly prove her bravery. Although Penny desires to be one of the guys she is different, she is more mature. Throughout the film Penny harbors a secret attraction to Tiny. This is a secret that she dare not reveal for fear of losing her place within the group of friends.

BRENT is a nine-year-old child who thinks he is a man. He is the youngest child in his family and through his older brother he has access to adult information that the other children do not have. Brent feels that this gives him the place of authority within his group of friends. Brent uses his place of authority to bully the other children and make them feel insecure.

TINY is a nine-year-old boy with a soft loveable quality to him. He is more sensitive than the other boys his age and perhaps a bit more naive when it comes to girls. In the rough world that Tiny lives in he tries to hide his sensitive nature and assert himself as a guy. He looks to Brent as his example of how to act like a man. Tiny goes along with Brent's games to try and prove that he is equal to Brent. Tiny considers Penny his friend and goes out of his way to include her. Tiny thinks of her as one of the guys, someone he can goof around with and not be embarrassed. He is oblivious to Penny's attraction to him.
