Film Synopsis

For Vernon Wells, the new janitor at a Miami nursing home, the first day of work can't end soon enough. Between Claire Gingham, his tyrannical boss and a troublesome old Cuban man the job seems to be more than he bargained for. It won't take long, however, for Vernon to learn that there is more to José 'Jopo' Posada than meets the eye. But could he really be a guerilla warrior, fighting to free the elderly from the Gingham's oppressive tactics? Is he truly risking his life in the name of libertad and revolución? Or is he just a feeble old man making trouble with a funny accent and an over inflated imagination? ¡Viva Jopo! is a film that keeps you guessing - and laughing - until the very end.

Lead)
Jose Posada
Gender: Male
Age: 60-80

Jose ‘Jopo” Posada is loud, energetic and the biggest pain in the ass that the Americherish Nursing Home has ever had. His repeated outbursts of revolutionary doctrine are getting on everybody’s nerves. He’s a troublemaker in every sense of the word. But there is another side to the mysterious old Cuban resident. Jopo is a thoughtful man for whom nothing ever seems to work out. He never intended to end up wasting away in a place like this heartless nursing home where his idealistic socialist speeches are treated like nothing more than delusional ramblings. As a young man, he fled Cuba, bound for glory and poised to be the next great leader. What happened next could have happened to anyone, given the confusion of those times. He got on the wrong boat. Now, firmly confident in his ideals and still fueled by the fire of a revolution he can’t let die, Jopo has one final trick up his sleeve. But he can’t do it alone. Cuban / Latin Americans preferred. Must be able to play a convincing cuban accent.

(Lead)
Vernon Wells
Gender: Male
Age: 25-40

Vernon is not the sort of man to make things happen. From the outside, he appears quiet, nerdy and insecure. Inside, however, lurks a fiery intensity just waiting to be sparked. The new janitor at Americherish, Vernon’s eagerness to succeed at his new job is quickly jeopardized by his curiosity about the strange goings on at the nursing home. Vernon’s expressive eyes portray his growing fascination as the truth behind Jopo (the troublesome old Cuban man) starts to become clear. It ignites in Vernon a deep compassion for the residents of Americherish and, eventually, an outburst of revolutionary proportions. Open to any ethnicity.

(Large Principal)
Claire Gingham
Gender: Female
Age: 35-60

A rapid-fire racist nursing home director with a heart of stone, Gingham talks almost as fast as she walks. She welcomes the new janitor, Vernon Wells, to his job with a double shift and a warning: Watch out for Jose Posada. She’s fed up with his outbursts and feels that it is about time they start clamping down harder on the residents. There isn’t a warm or caring bone in her body.
