Mental health conditions contribute significantly to the global disease burden yet remain under-addressed in health systems around the world. Since its inception in 2010, the discipline of Global Mental Health (GMH) has expanded the boundaries of mental health as a vital public good worthy of investment. GMH uses unique tools to explore how cultural, societal, and individual factors influence population mental health.
At the School of Global Health, York University, we envision a world where equitable and culturally sensitive mental health systems are accessible to all. Our Global Mental Health specialized honours stream strives to empower students with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking necessary to address complex mental health systems, policies, and access barriers worldwide. Students will be well-equipped for roles in international health organizations, NGOs, or research institutions focusing on mental health.
Through interdisciplinary training (e.g., opportunities to take approved courses in the Department of Psychology) that integrates both quantitative and qualitative approaches, we aim to develop future leaders who can engage in collaborative problem-solving to promote mental health and health equity at local to global levels. The specialized honours stream in GMH cultivates agents of change who advocate for reform, promote mental health equity, and engender resilience and well-being, particularly among disadvantaged and marginalized populations.
