Prospective York Apartments Moving Information

Welcome to York Apartments!

We are thrilled to welcome you to York Apartments as your home for the coming year! Our Housing & Conference Services and Residence Life teams are dedicated to making your living experience truly exceptional. We look forward to providing you with a rewarding, enriching, and enjoyable experience in a safe student community that will positively impact your personal, educational, and social growth.

At York apartments, you'll find a community where you can enjoy an independent lifestyle in a student-friendly and family-oriented environment. It's important for everyone to understand and follow the guidelines and respect their neighbors to ensure a positive experience for all.

As you move into a high-density apartment building, you may encounter some common issues typical of such residences. We kindly ask all residents to contribute to enhancing the living experience for everyone. While we strive to maintain a peaceful environment, please be aware that, especially with children living in the building, occasional noise is to be expected.

Move-in Steps

Students will have received their room assignment via email, with their tenancy agreement. Please ensure you have added apstatus@yorku.ca as a recognized sender.

Don't wait—apply for your YU-card online early to avoid delays! First, ensure you're enrolled in courses. Then, review the picture requirements and upload a good selfie. Once approved, add your YU-card to your smartphone. If you don't have an approved YU-card application 2 weeks before move in, you might face delays in getting your YU-card and accessing services like the residence buildings, laundry, and more.

Please visit the YU-Card Application page to apply for your YU Card.

Students were given their move-in date via email with their tenancy agreement. Students can move in during business hours - Monday through Friday 8:30am-4:30pm (excluding holidays).

Students living in York Apartments will receive the Property and Liability Insurance coverage included in their residence fees. For more information on what is included in the insurance, please go to our Student Property and Liability Insurance - York Apartments page.

Students may opt to have additional insurance through their own provider as well. The University does not take responsibility for any personal items that are lost or damaged in residence due to theft, fire, floods or other incidents beyond our control.

York apartments offers a mature and independent living environment with self-contained furnished and non-furnished units. When moving in, residents should bring the following items:

  • Furniture (if moving into unfurnished units): living room, bedroom, and kitchen furniture.
  • Bed and bath linens: mattress cover, sheets, blankets, pillows, towels, and garbage bin.
  • Kitchen items: microwave, toaster, kettle, dishes, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, and dishcloths.
  • Other essentials: iron, reading or bedside lamps, telephone, television set, clothes hangers, waste bin, cleaning materials, plunger and vacuum cleaner.

Purchase stylish bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen items, at great student-friendly pricing. Residence Linens has a variety of items that will turn your room into your second home! Order online at Residence Linens and your items will be delivered to your residence before move-in day.

If you need to book an elevator key for your move-in, please complete the Elevator Booking Request Form no later than 48 hours prior to your move-in. Our office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays. Once approved, you'll have a 2 hour window to use the elevator for your move-in.

Please note that all York apartments buildings have elevators except for Passy Crescent residences (townhouse-style residences), where you might need to navigate a couple of flights of stairs depending on your unit assignment.

We kindly ask that you do not hold the elevator doors open, as this can cause mechanical issues.

Students moving in may contact Parking Services for a short-term parking pass that can be used during their move-in period. Please note, without a pass, cars will be ticketed as per the Parking Enforcement policy. If you require a permanent parking spot, contact Parking Services to arrange for a paid monthly permit.

You will need to bring valid government-issued photo ID or YU-card in order to move-in. Valid ID would include a passport, drivers license, Ontario ID Card (or equivalent) or YU-Card.

Please review our Transit & Driving Directions.

Direct yourself to 340 Assiniboine to pick up your keys. The Housing Office is located on the East side of the building.

  • Keys are only issued to the student resident (no exceptions)
  • Must show YU-card or government issued photo ID for verification
  • Once verified, you will receive your residence access card and room keys

Safety first! Decorations must not block or hang from smoke detectors, fire alarms, or sprinklers. Tampering with fire safety equipment can lead to serious consequences.

Pro tip: Use 3M hooks and other removable hangers. Avoid tape, nails, screws, or stickers - they can damage walls and furniture. Painting is also not allowed. At the end of your stay, all decorations must be removed, and any damage will be charged to your account.

After unpacking, take a quick tour! Find essentials like laundry and garbage/recycling areas. Say hi to neighbours along the way! The more you explore, the more comfortable you’ll feel.

Once you’re settled, take a walk around campus - your new backyard! Find your classrooms, the library, and cozy study spots. Check out dining halls, cafés, and hidden gems for snacks or meals. Discovering your favourite spots are part of the adventure!
