Incoming Global Learning Funding

York University works with a number of external funding agencies to provide scholarships to students who wish to participate in an academic exchange or as an international visiting research trainee (IVRT). Review the list of scholarships below for more information on eligibility, award amounts, how to apply, and deadlines. 

Global Affairs Canada

Global Affairs Canada provides scholarships to support the best and brightest students to come to Canada and York University on a short-term study or research projects. There are four scholarships available – please click on the corresponding links for more information as each scholarship has unique eligibility requirements, scholarship amounts, and application deadlines. APPLICATIONS FOR 2026-27 ARE NOW OPEN!

  • Overview: The Government of Canada announced the Emerging Leaders in the Americas Program (ELAP) in 2009 to support the development of human capital and the next generation of leaders in the Americas while strengthening the linkages between post-secondary institutions in Canada and the Americas. These scholarships provide students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions. The ELAP is part of Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Program.
  • Eligibility: for students from post-secondary institutions located in Latin America and the Caribbean with short-term exchange opportunities for study or research at York University.   • Award Amounts: between $8,200 and $11,100 depending on length of stay

  • Overview: The Study in Canada Scholarships (SICS) offer Canadian post-secondary institutions the opportunity to host international students from a diverse range of countries and territories for short-term study or research exchanges. Funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Academic Relations program, SICS aims to strengthen and diversify Canada’s international linkages and partnerships. The new connections created through the program will diversify and enrich Canada’s education engagement with a diverse range of partners, strengthen bilateral ties, as well as deepen people-to-people ties and cultural connections between Canada and participating countries/territories.
  • Eligibility: available for students from post-secondary institutions located in eligible countries/territories in Asia, Europe, Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.   • Award Amounts: between $10,200 and $14,000 depending on length of stay

  • Overview: The Government of Canada is offering scholarship opportunities in the Indo-Pacific region through the Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2) program. This program is an expansion of the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED). SEED-2 is a key initiative under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. The program provides opportunities for students from Member States of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Pacific Island Countries and Mongolia to conduct short-term study or research in Canadian post-secondary institutions in areas that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . The Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development – Phase 2 (SEED-2) program aims to reduce poverty in eligible countries and to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . Scholarships and educational exchanges will contribute towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SEED-2 contributes to strengthening people-to-people ties between Canada and the Indo-Pacific region.
  • Eligibility: for students who are interested in study/research in areas that contribute to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at York University.   • Award Amounts: between $10,200 and $12,700 depending on length of stay

Mitacs

Mitacs is a not-for-profit national research organization that, in partnerships with Canadian academia, private industry and government, operates research and training programs in fields related to industrial and social innovation. There are two main research awards for incoming students to York University. Please click on the corresponding links for more information. For an overview of Mitacs and the process, click here

  • Eligibility: international undergraduates from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Tunisia. From May to September of each year, top-ranked applicants participate in a 12-week research internship under the supervision of Canadian university faculty members in a variety of academic disciplines, from science, engineering and mathematics to the humanities and social sciences.
  • Award Amounts: varies
  • Deadline: Summer 2023 applications will open in August – September 2022

  • Note that Mitacs recipients must follow the International Visiting Research Trainee program at York University.
  • Eligibility: senior undergraduate and graduate students to undertake research projects abroad. Projects last 12–24 weeks and all disciplines are eligible.
  • Award Amounts: $6000

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Scholarship

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation International Visiting Graduate & Undergraduate Student Scholar Award will be available annually to students at a university in Greece with which York has a formal relationship. The recipient will receive the designation of "The Stavros Niarchos Foundation International Visiting Scholar" during the period of their stay. This award will be open to students who are completing an undergraduate, Masters, or PhD in any discipline and intend to visit York University for study or research purposes. Students are eligible to receive up to $10,000 per 4 month semester. Students staying less than 4 months will have their award amount pro-rated.

Eligibility: Students must be a Greek citizen and registered in a Greek post-secondary institution that has a bi-lateral agreement with York University. Students can be any academic level, and come for either study or research. 

Award Amount: Up to $10,000 per four-month semester. Students who visit for less than a semester will have their award pro-rated.
