Graduate-Level International Students

As an international student in the Faculty of Graduate Studies, you occupy a special place at York University. York International offers several programs and services specifically designed to support our graduate-level international students, in addition to the resources available to all international students. On this page, you will find an overview of the services and programs York International offers to support your success at York University, in Canada, and beyond. Please visit us at 200 York Lanes (just down the hall from the Faculty of Graduate Studies office).

At the beginning of every term York International hosts orientation sessions for new international students. Join us to connect with the international student community and to learn information that every new international student should know about life in York and in Toronto. Click here for more information and to register for an upcoming session.

As an international student, you are required to obtain certain documentation from the Canadian Immigration authority before entering Canada. In this section, you will find information pertaining to:

  York International also provides immigration related services to graduate-level international students including:

  • Free information sessions and workshops about permanent residency policies and procedures
  • Individual and group advising with our Immigration Specialist at York International
  • Job search/resume/cover letter workshops throughout the year

All international students at York University are covered by a health insurance plan that is administered by York International called the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). Graduate-level students are also covered by a supplementary plan, which is administered by either the Graduate Student Association or CUPE 3903, depending on your status as a Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, or other designation. York International's UHIP Assistant is available to answer all of your questions about your general health insurance plan coverage and to help you print your insurance card in our office. Highlights of this section include:

  • What is UHIP
  • How to enroll into the program
  • Who is covered (including spouse, dependent children etc)
  • How long am I covered for
  • How to get a refund if I withdraw from the university or become a permanent resident
  • Graduate Supplementary Health Insurance information
  • Accessing health care facilities
