Degree Options & Requirements

Beyond choosing to study Anthropology, you’ve got the option to customize how you study. You can choose the length and depth of specialization within your degree — whether it’s a three-year bachelor’s or more intensive four-year honours bachelor’s program, or even an International Bachelors (iBA). If you’re weighing two subjects of interest but can’t make a decision, you’re able to declare a major, which would be your primary area of study, as well as a minor, or secondary subject. Or give them equal billing and go for a double major. Whatever path you envision, you’ll have choices to accommodate you along the way.

Students must pass at least 90 credits meeting the Faculty's requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least 4.00. A minimum of 21 General Education credits required. At least 30 major credits required. At least 12 credits in the major must be at the 3000 or 4000 level. At least 18 credits at the 3000 or 4000 level and at least 18 credits outside the major.

Checklists:

Students must pass at least 120 credits meeting the Faculty's requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least 5.00. A minimum of 21 General Education credits. At least 42 major credits. At least 36 upper-level credits at the 3000 or 4000 level, including at least 18 credits at the 4000 level. At least 18 credits outside the major. Students completing a double major or major/minor are deemed to have fulfilled this requirement.

Checklists:

Students must pass at least 120 credits meeting the Faculty's degree and program requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least 5.00. A minimum of 21 General Education credits. At least 54 major credits. At least 36 upper-level credits at the 3000 or 4000 level, including at least 18 credits at the 4000 level. At least 18 credits outside the major

The Honours BA program may be pursued jointly with approved Honours Double Major degree programs in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, or the Lassonde School of Engineering. For more information, refer to the listings for specific Honours programs that may be pursued jointly with other Faculties.

Note: in a double major program, a course may count only once toward major credit.

Anthropology may be linked with any Honours Double Major Interdisciplinary BA program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.

Major credits: students must take at least 36 credits in anthropology and at least 36 credits in the interdisciplinary (linked) program. At least 18 credits are required at the 4000 level, including at least 12 credits in anthropology and six credits in the interdisciplinary program.

Students must pass at least 120 credits meeting the Faculty's requirements with a cumulative grade point average of at least 5.00. A minimum of 21 General Education credits. At least 42 major credits.

In addition, students in the Honours iBA program must fulfill all international requirements.

The Honours BA program may be pursued jointly with approved Honours Minor degree programs in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design,or the Lassonde School of Engineering.

Note: in a major/minor program, a course may count only once toward major credit or minor credit.

The Honours iBA program in Anthropology may be pursued jointly with any Honours Minor BA program in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies.

The Honours Minor BA program may be combined with any approved Honours BA program offering a major/minor option in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change, the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, or the Lassonde School of Engineering.

The Honours Minor in Medical Anthropology may be combined with any approved Honours BA program that offers a major/minor option in the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change (Bachelor of Environmental Studies - BES), the Faculty of Health, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, the Faculty of Science, the School of the Arts, Media, Performance & Design, or the Lassonde School Engineering.

Minor credits: a minimum of 30 credits in the minor, including at least three credits at the 4000-level.

Honours Minor BA in Medical Anthropology Requirements

The Honours Minor in Advocacy & Public Engagement offers training using anthropological perspectives connecting the academic and non-academic sectors.

The minor/certificate program provides intensive training in the required skills of applied anthropology:

  • the ethics of advocacy and advocacy-based research;
  • formulating advocacy-based research questions;
  • the ethnographic/qualitative field methods to investigate these issues;
  • and the public engagement skills by which critical interventions on the basis of that research may be made.

This Honours minor program in Applied or “Engaged” Anthropology requires 30 credits of which 24 credits are required courses. The program provides two high impact Experiential Education Community Based Research opportunities in which the applied anthropology skill set can be applied in real world context. There is one required course at each year level (2 through 4) plus an additional work placement capstone experience.
