Number of Positions Available: 7 (number of positions are subject to budgetary approval)

Type of Position: Paid

Rate of Pay: $18.00 per hour

Employment Term: May 2025 – April 2026

Hours of Work: Summer: Up to 23 hours per week; Fall/Winter: Up to 15 hours per week


Job Description:

The LA&PS First Year Experience (FYE) aims to welcome and support incoming LA&PS students across affiliated programs as they transition into university and into their upper years at York. The FYE consists of a variety of important transition programming, including Orientation, the LA&PS Peer Mentor Program, the First Year Experience eClass, the LA&PS Community Hub, and several other events and outreach initiatives.

The LA&PS First Year Experience (FYE) supports the mandates of York University and LA&PS Colleges by helping new and incoming students:

  • foster the skills necessary for academic, personal, and professional success;
  • set and achieve their goals;
  • learn about university supports and services and navigate them effectively;
  • cultivate enhanced self-awareness and confidence asking for help and problem solving;
  • build community with peers, faculty, and staff;
  • create a meaningful student experience and a strong sense of connection to York University

 

In their role, the First Year Experience Assistants supports the administration of several initiatives, including the Peer Mentor Program and First Year Experience eClass, provides regular coaching and support to the FYE Peer Mentor volunteers, contributes to the planning and execution of transition and engagement programming, and works alongside the LA&PS Colleges team to ensure the successful execution of mandates and a positive student experience.

 

Major Areas of Responsibility:

 

  • Assist in the development and delivery of transition and engagement programming for first year LA&PS students, including Orientation (Fall, Winter, and Summer), the LA&PS Peer Mentor Program, the First Year Experience eClass, the LA&PS Community Hub, festive community building events, outreach (ex. Tabling, classroom visits, etc) and print and digital resources;
  • Conduct bi-weekly check-in meetings with Peer Mentor volunteers;
  • Support the skill development and participation of Peer Mentor volunteers and track their contributions to the program throughout the term;
  • Provide additional support to mentees as needed;
  • Identify and escalate any issues with mentors and mentees to supervisors;
  • Triage student’s needs with appropriate campus referrals
  • Facilitate ongoing engagement activities for outreach like tabling or classroom visits;
  • Staff and facilitate the LA&PS Community Hub during regular hours;
  • Assist with various administrative duties as assigned, including scheduling, record-keeping and collating feedback;
  • Stay in regular contact with your director supervisor or other Student Engagement Coordinators;
  • Attend all trainings throughout the year;
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

Student Learning Components:

The Work/Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York University undergraduate students. Work/Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer a learning and development opportunity for Work/Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members, Work/Study Student employees will provide support to their relevant department/faculty in clerical, administrative and technical capacities. As part of your Work-Study/LEAP experience, you will participate in Becoming YU, a program designed to support students in:

  • creating meaningful goals and objectives;
  • recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;
  • identifying their competencies and skills; and
  • articulating their skills and experiences with confidence.

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on your progress and getting valuable feedback.

Qualifications:

  • Upper year level undergraduate York student
  • Good academic standing
  • Previous experience with peer mentorship at a post-secondary institution
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative
  • Extensive knowledge of York’s services and resources for students and effective strategies on navigating the university
  • Students who are a good fit for this position are dynamic, approachable, knowledgeable and open to learning about themselves and others. They will show high levels of emotional intelligence combined with excellent adaptability, organizational skills, and team-building skills

Skills

  • Experience-based knowledge of effective strategies for academic, personal and professional success at university
  • Ability to liaise with campus partners including but not limited to: LA&PS Academic Advising, LA&PS Global Community Engagement, PASS, SNACK, Student Counselling, Health & Wellbeing, etc.
  • Experience with project management tools such as MS Teams, Slack, etc.
  • Sensitivity to and awareness of the academic support needs of students
  • Ability to work supportively with students in a confidential and professional manner
  • Demonstrated commitment to peer support and the value of post-secondary education
  • Demonstrate leadership ability
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Some graphic design/artistic ability, marketing and/or communications background is an asset
  • Great attention to detail
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability and willingness to work both independently and as part of a team
