This course focuses on the performance of Latin jazz repertoire. An in-depth examination of various types of rhythmic organization in indigenous Afrolatin genres will also be presented. Ensembles concentrate on group dynamics and rhythmic interaction with an emphasis on rhythmic feel, idiomatic improvisatory vocabulary, and repertoire development. Students will be required to compose new repertoire or create new confluences within the Latin jazz framework as models for improvisation.
