Creative Writing Student Wins Major Prize

"York Creative Writing graduate Harpit Samra has won the 2018 Stony Brook Short Fiction Prize. Her story, "What Isolation Bred," written in York's program, was chosen from among more than two hundred entries from the United States and Canada. The judge, Pulitzer Prize winning writer Paul Harding, writes of Harpit's story: "'What Isolation Bred' is a devastating and gorgeous portrait of a boy almost methodically broken into pieces over the course of growing into a man. It is gorgeous because it is unwavering and true. It is devastating because it is lamentably familiar in outline, wholly gripping in its particulars. This story is haunting and shot through with hard, pure pathos." As part of her win, Harpit has been invited to attend the Southampton Writers Conference in Long Island, New York."
