AP/FR 3081 3.00

Advanced Written French (CEFR C1)

LThis course focuses on advanced techniques of written expression and on the development of reading skills. The unifying thematic framework for reading and writing activities is that of contemporary Quebec society and culture.

AP/FR 3081 is an asynchronous online course in advanced written communication that enables students to perfect their comprehension of written texts as well as the syntactic and stylistic quality of their own writing. The course builds upon structures and techniques introduced in earlier courses, particularly in relation to the analysis and composition of complex phrases. Thematically, the course offers students an occasion to discover contemporary Quebec society.

In terms of the analysis of third-party texts, students will learn to identify the structure of journalistic texts, identify different points of view, and rank the importance of arguments made and information given. In relation to the refinement of their own written production, students will learn to improve the syntactic and grammatical quality of their writing, acquire greater lexical variety, apply techniques for the purposes of summarizing information (synonymy, nominalization, indirect speech, active/passive voice, etc.), and the use of complex phrases to express opposition, concession, doubt, probability, comparison, causal relationships, and to make proper use of language correction tools. Students will also gain awareness of the audience to which various types of texts are geared, and the resulting register and style to be adopted in these different contexts.
