French Literature, Culture & Society: The Challenges of Modernity

This course delves into the key elements of French literature, culture, and society from the French Revolution to the 20th century by studying its literary masterpieces. Students gain an understanding of the evolution of the writer's role, both male and female, the evolution of the literary landscape, the debates on literature's influence, and the philosophical ideas that shaped modernity. In this course, students familiarize themselves with the literary movements and the development of modernism, from its earliest stages to its crisis. Through an in-depth study of seminal works of the period, students gain a unique perspective on society in pursuit of new ideals and grappling with the aftermath of the two world wars.
