On Tuesday, March 16, 2021, 11:30am, Dr. Valerie Steeves (Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa) will be delivering CCY’s annual Chamberlain Lecture entitled, “Talking Toys: How Smart Technology Reshapes Childhood.”  Based on a discourse analysis of Hello Barbie’s lexicon, this talk will explore how talking toys seek to restructure the notion of play and insert the child into the consumer marketplace. 

Valerie Steeves, J.D., Ph.D. is a Full Professor in the Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Canada. She is the principal investigator of the eQuality Project, a 7-year SSHRC-funded partnership of researchers, educators, policy makers and youth that is examining the ways in which commercial sites structure children’s social interactions. Professor Steeves received her J.D. from the University of Toronto and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1984.
