Queer and Trans Childhoods

By exploring the intersections of queer theory, children's studies, and children's rights, this course investigates the unique challenges and issues faced by 2SLGBTQI+ young people and their experiences of queer joy in North American and global contexts. Through a critical examination of how gender and sexuality are discursively constructed and produced in various childhood and youth contexts, CCY 2900 provides an overview of the lived experiences of inclusion and exclusion that 2SLGBTQI+ children and adolescents navigate. The course will equip students with the knowledge and tools necessary to support and understand the diverse experiences of 2SLGBTQI+ young people within a children's rights and social justice framework. Prerequisite: CCY 1999.
