This course is a survey of the origins, beliefs and contemporary practices of some of the more well-known world’s religions: Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Taoism, Shinto, Sikhism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Confucianism. Emphasis is given to the believers’ own accounts of their religion and its practice in the contemporary world. We are interested in seeing the broader aspects of what religion may be or may not be. The visible attributes and characteristics of individual religions often lay hidden in the multiple levels of assumptions, practices and beliefs of a different religion. Learn to see beyond the obvious.
