Frequently Asked Questions for International Students

As an international student, when should I apply to the York Internship Program?

You must apply at least two terms in advance of the date you want to start your internship. Citizenship and Immigration Canada takes a long time to process co-op work permit applications, so it is important that you apply for a permit as soon as you receive your official letter of confirmation from the LA&PS internship program. Internships begin three times a year, in May, September and January, so for example, for internships starting in May 2021, you need to apply to the program by fall 2020.

I have been accepted into the LA&PS Internship Program. When should I apply for the co-op work permit?

You should apply for the co-op work permit as soon as you receive your official letter of confirmation from the LA&PS Internship Program. You will only get access to the internship job postings once you receive your co-op work permit, which takes some time. While you are waiting to receive the permit, you will have access to internship support services, such as one-on-one appointments with a career education specialist and resumé and interviewing skills workshops.

Can I search, apply and interview for internship positions while waiting for my co-op permit?

No. International students cannot access the internship job postings, nor apply for positions before obtaining a valid co-op work permit. This is to avoid you applying for a position and getting hired before all the paperwork is in place, which would cause complications for both you and the employer.

However, while you are waiting to receive your permit, you will have access to internship support services, such as one-on-one appointments with a career education specialist and resumé and interviewing skills workshops.

I have received my co-op work permit. What is my next step?

Email a copy of your co-op work permit to lapsintr@yorku.ca. If you have maintained the academic eligibility to remain in the internship program, you will be granted access to the internship job postings and can begin applying for positions right away.

Must I have an internship job offer prior to applying for a co-op work permit?

No. You cannot search for or receive an internship job offer prior to applying for a co-op work permit. As soon as you are accepted into the internship program, you must apply for Citizenship & Immigration Canada’s co-op work permit. Your official letter of confirmation from the LA&PS internship program must be submitted with your co-op work permit application and will be considered your “job offer” at the time.

Can I use my co-op work permit to apply for jobs outside the LA&PS Internship Program?

No. The LA&PS Internship Program will be listed as your employer on your work permit, so it will only authorize you to accept jobs affiliated with our internship program.

I have an off-campus work permit. Can I use it for an LA&PS Internship Program position?

No. You are required to obtain a co-op work permit to participate in the LA&PS Internship Program.
