Department of History welcomes Professor Davarian L. Baldwin for a public lecture on gentrification and higher education

The Department of History is hosting a public lecture on March 19 with guest speaker Davarian L. Baldwin, the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Founding Director of the Smart Cities Research Lab at Trinity College. Baldwin’s lecture will explore topics from his recent book, In the Shadow of the Ivy Tower: How Universities are Plundering our Cities (Bold Type Books, 2021), which exposes higher education’s growing control over urban America and the costs for those living in the shadows. The lecture is open to the York community.

Dr. Davarian Baldwin is the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies and Founding Director of the Smart Cities Research Lab at Trinity College, an award-winning author of several books and has been featured in outlets including NBC News, BBC, TIME magazine. He was named a 2022 Freedom Scholar by the Marguerite Casey Foundation for his work in racial and economic justice.
