Canisia Lubrin, a graduate from York’s Creative Writing program, was awarded the 2025 Carol Shields Prize for Fiction on May 1 for her debut work of fiction CODE NOIR. The prize, which includes $150,000 USD in addition to support through mentorship, scholarship and residency opportunities, aims to address gender inequality in the literary world by recognizing fiction written by women and non-binary authors in Canada and the United States.

Lubrin’s writing has been shortlisted for several other awards including the Governor General's Award, the Pat Lowther Memorial Award and the Trillium Book Award for Poetry. In 2021, she was named poet of the year by The Globe & Mail.
