Department of Politics associate professor co-writes article about immigration policy for The Conversation

Headshot of Ethel Tungohan

Ethel Tungohan, associate professor in the Department of Politics, has co-written an article in The Conversation about the Parent and Grandparents Program (PGP) recently announced by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Current immigration policies do not prioritize grandparents, creating difficulty for families trying to reunite in Canada. The article says that grandparents who immigrate to Canada are sometimes considered liabilities and thought to take advantage of Canadian social and health care systems, even though they provide a huge service to families by providing unpaid childcare.

Ethel Tungohan is associate professor and the Canada Research Chair in Canadian Migration Policy, Impacts and Activism, and is an assistant professor of Politics and Social Science at York University. She received her PhD from University of Toronto. Her research interests include immigration, social movements, migrant activism, public policy, socially engaged research, intersectionality, Canadian and comparative politics, immigration and citizenship policy, gender analysis and critical race theory.
