The Institute for Social Research (ISR) has existed at York University for 60 years. It has recently been formally designated York’s first Organized Research Service Unit (ORSU). This designation is conducted by the Senate Sub-Committee on Academic Policy, Planning and Research, which involved an evaluation of several key aspects of the research unit.

The ISR runs three centres and collaborates with governments, community groups and businesses on research and data collection to inform policy making. At York, the ISR analyzes York’s student and course data, along with administrative policies, to support decision-making and guide research projects. The ISR’s director, Lorne Foster, professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration, says the designation came as part of York’s recent intensification of digital initiatives and prioritization of research.
