
Jennifer Pybus, an associate professor in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies (LA&PS) and an expert in artificial intelligence, was quoted in a CBC article about the risks of partnering with American AI companies. She noted that while Canadian data may be collected and processed domestically, it ultimately remains governed by American companies. There are also concerns among Canadians about the amount of electricity needed to power the data-storage centres used by American companies proposing AI partnerships.
Pybus is Canada Research Chair in data, democracy and AI and received her PhD from McMaster University. Her research interests include communications, information technologies, social AI, platform politics, datafication, dataveillance and privacy.
