Duygu Biricik Gulseren, Associate Professor of Human Resource Management, recently visited the Osaka University of Economics as Dr. Tae Funakoshi’s guest. The visit focused on research exchange, and teaching and learning from Japanese perspectives on disability inclusion in organizational contexts.

As part of the visit, Biricik Gulseren presented her research at the Business Law Information Centre’s (BLIC) Annual Research Seminar. Presenting alongside Dr. Chikae Naito of Musashi University, she shared research on how organizations can better support employees living with chronic pain. The seminar was attended by faculty members, researchers, PhD scholars and practitioners from across Japan and generated a lively and interdisciplinary discussion on disability inclusion and employee well-being.

In addition to the research seminar, Biricik Gulseren conducted site visits to deepen her understanding of Japanese approaches to disability inclusion and workplace support systems. The visit provided valuable insight into local practices, policies and cultural perspectives on accommodation and inclusion, enriching the comparative dimension of her ongoing research.

Biricik Gulseren also delivered a guest lecture in a third-year undergraduate course on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at the Osaka University of Economics. The lecture focused on disability inclusion and accommodation practices in Canadian workplaces, highlighting the role of inclusive human resource management policies and practices. Students actively engaged with the discussion, drawing comparisons between Canadian and Japanese organizational contexts.

Overall, the visit strengthened international academic connections and contributed to ongoing conversations on disability inclusion in research, teaching and practice.
