Carl Ehrlich, a humanities professor specializing in Israelite civilization, was quoted in a recent Toronto Today article discussing the Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) decision to change labels on artifacts previously identified as originating from Palestine. Some geographical labels in the same cases now read “Eastern Mediterranean coast,” prompting criticism from those who believe the change is due to political pressure. Ehrlich says that the museum’s decision to relabel the artifacts was likely made to try to avoid controversy and to please a larger audience, but the decision has instead had the opposite effect.
Ehrlich received his Honours BA magna cum laude (1976) in Judaic Studies from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and his MA (1984) and PhD (1991) in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from Harvard University. He is currently a professor in the Department of Humanities at York University.
