Sociology professor emeritus discusses private care homes in recent CBC article

Headshot of Pat Armstrong

Pat Armstrong, professor emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor of Sociology, was quoted in a CBC article about the private care home industry. The article looks at the communities in Watson and Estevan Saskatchewan, and the several years of fundraising they have done to replace aging long‑term care homes. Millions have been raised, but after repeated delays, the province is now taking a new approach: hiring private companies to build and operate the new facilities.

Armstong who led a decade‑long international study on long‑term care says the move to privatized homes could have major consequences for seniors. She warns that private operators often rely on a more unstable workforce, with more part‑time staff, fewer benefits and lower qualifications.

Armstrong is a Distinguished Research Professor Emeritus and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Her research interests include health, women, work, health care and feminist political economy.
