A recent article in Global News discusses how forest fires have become more extreme and difficult to contain in Canada as climate change creates hotter, drier summers. Both Canada and the U.S. are dealing with numerous fires this summer, however the U.S. President Donald Trump recently criticized Canada’s handling of the fires, threatening to impose more tariffs due to smoke from the fires.
Associate professor Eric Kennedy comments in the article, stating it’s hard to judge if Canada is doing enough to tackle wildfires when it is such a complex issue, though there is certainly room for improvement when it comes to mitigating fires. He notes that collaboration between the U.S. and Canada is essential since wildfires affect those living in both countries.
Eric Kennedy received his PhD from Arizona State University and is currently an associate professor in the Disaster & Emergency Management program at York University. His research interests include emergency management, forestry, wildfire management, science policy, science and technology studies and COVID.
