Parts of the city of Whitehorse, Yukon do not have consistent phone service, leaving residents worried that they may be unable to call 911 in an emergency. Bell, the area’s service provider, has urged customers living in the area to keep their cell phone’s Wi-Fi up to date in case of emergency.
Jack Rozdilsky, associate professor of emergency management, disagrees with the advice. Rozdilsky says Whitehorse needs a proper 911 call system, since Wi-Fi cannot always sustain an emergency call. He offers advice on how Whitehorse residents can seek support in an emergency if they have inconsistent phone service.
His research and practice interests include interdisciplinary emergency management and Homeland Security. He performs field-based qualitative research at locations that have been impacted by disasters of natural, technological or social origins.
