Zachary Spicer, associate professor in the School of Public Policy & Administration, was quoted in a CityNews article about municipal elections in Ontario. With many communities struggling to attract candidates and some facing vacant positions, local leaders have urged residents to run for office, emphasizing the important role municipal governments play in people's daily lives.
Spicer explains that while many people may be interested in serving in local government, family commitments and other obligations can make it difficult to take on these roles. He notes that municipal positions often require attendance at daytime meetings and offer limited flexibility, creating barriers for potential candidates.
He also pointed to recent provincial reforms as a factor shaping local elections and governance across Ontario, including legislation that allows the provincial government to appoint regional chairs in some municipalities.
Spicer holds a PhD in political science from the University of Western Ontario. His research interests include politics and government, public administration, local government, smart cities, data governance and innovation policy.
