Economic equality and labour laws – discussions by Prof. David Doorey

Exploring the employee protection acts, enforcement of labour standards and the significance of lending a voice to the worker; Prof. David Doorey discusses various aspects with a panel virtually on the video titled: ILERA2020: Cross Border Reflections on the Future of the Wagner Model.

Doorey along with the panelists joining him virtually, highlight various layers where concentration of power, the brunt of the pandemic being faced by these workers, the ability and inability of non-union workers engaging in resistance - are all explored. The discussion also presents the differences in US and Canadian policies. Questions such as the scope of protection acts and how much can the existing institutions do to channelize the energy of the dis-empowered workers are all brought forward.

Building up on similar aspects such as what collective actions should be taken to minimize the issues being faced by workers and employees, in this next video Doorey invites Sara Mojtehedzadeh, the celebrated labour and wealth reporter of Toronto Star, titled; Doorey Mojtehedzadeh Fireside Chat.

Sara reflects on the reality of these migrant workers who go through mental stress and various challenges regardless of their age or gender, since they greatly depend on labour laws but unfortunately fall through the cracks. Her area of expertise allows her to explore dangerous work environments, complications of finding a stable job with pension and benefits, as well as comments on the gig economy. Their discussion covers areas of exposing the much-needed infuriating issues and how to reach the deep-rooted problems which often remain neglected.
