JP 3081 3.0 - Food and the Japanese Language
This unique course explores how food is reflected in the Japanese language and how food-related communication reveals deeper cultural values, practices, and social relationships. Students will examine topics such as menus, recipes, food vocabulary, and the ways culinary and gastronomic experiences are described and shared in Japanese society.
Food and language are increasingly important areas of academic research, offering a dynamic and accessible lens through which to understand culture. Through this course, students will develop a deeper appreciation of Japanese foodways while enhancing their language, cultural, and analytical skills. The course may be taken as an elective and can also count toward the Honours Minor in Japanese Studies.
A highlight of the program is its study abroad component in Japan. Building on the knowledge gained during the first part of the course at York, students will have the opportunity to engage directly with Japanese food culture, observe authentic language use in everyday contexts, and collect their own linguistic data for analysis. During the second half of the course in Japan, students will apply their learning through research, critical analysis, and academic writing.
By the end of the course, students will be able to analyze food-related language in Japanese, explore the cultural meanings embedded in food discourse, communicate ideas about Japanese foodways, and conduct independent research on topics related to language, food, and culture. This immersive experience offers a meaningful and memorable way to deepen both language proficiency and cultural understanding.
