SP 2020 6.0 - Intermediate Spanish Abroad

This course involves the intensive study of the Spanish language at the intermediate level as well as of the culture of the Spanish-speaking country of immersion, four weeks at York University and four weeks in the Spanish-language locale. Interaction with native speakers through cultural activities and excursions complements in-class development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills through written exercises, compositions, oral presentations, and conversations. Course materials highlight the history and socio-cultural context of the destination country.

AP/SP 1000 6.00 or Permission of the Program.

Course credit exclusion

AP/SP 1050 6.00, AP/SP 2000 6.00, AP/SP 2010 6.00, GL/SP 1520 6.00.

Note

Some students who are native Spanish-speakers may not register in AP/SP2020. Enrollment will depend on their level of Spanish fluency. For information, please contact Fernanda Carra-Salsberg, Coordinator of the Spanish Program and Course Director for AP/SP2020 at fcarra@yorku.ca.

Program Activities & Excursions

  • Day trips to Salamanca, Segovia, and Toledo
  • Walking tour of Ávila and old city walls
  • Ávila Cathedral
  • Group dinners

Accommodations and Meals

Students will in an on-campus residence and attend lectures at the Universidad Católica de Ávila. Students will be provided with a meal plan to eat at the residence’s on-site cafeteria.


Flights

  • There is no group flight for this course, and all admitted students are responsible for booking and paying for their own flights. However, given that the closest airport is in Madrid, there will be a charter bus to take students from the airport to Ávila. Students are welcome to arrive on a different flight and make their own way to Ávila by train if they so choose.
  • If you wish to arrive in Spain earlier than the course start date, or stay after the course is complete, you will be responsible for finding and paying for your own accommodations.

Entry Requirements

  • Students are responsible for knowing Spain’s entry and exit requirements and ensuring they have the appropriate travel documents. Please refer to the Government of Canada’s travel advisories and information for Italy. Students should consult the Consulate General of Spain in Toronto’s website to see if they require a tourist visa based on their country of citizenship. Students requiring a tourist visa should apply for one at least 2 months before their scheduled departure.
  • Any students with layovers in another country en route to Spain must also check that country’s entry and exit requirements and obtain a transit visa if one is needed.

Accommodations in Ávila, meal plan, charter bus transportation to/from Madrid airport (optional), transportation and excursions for day trips to Salamanca, Segovia, and Toledo, all site visits and excursions, welcome and farewell meal, professor-related costs (travel, accommodations, meals, incidentals).

Not Included in Program Fee

  • Flights to/from Madrid $1,200 Estimate. Depends on departure location and date of purchase.
  • Guard.me Travel Insurance $50 Estimate. Students are required to purchase Guard.me insurance.
  • Spending money $1000 Variable. All students should budget additional funds for meals, transportation, gifts, personal travel, etc.
  • York University Tuition (Domestic) $1,440 Based on Summer 2023 tuition fees. Subject to change.
  • York University Tuition (International) $7,032 Based on Summer 2023 tuition fees. Subject to change.
