Ray Williams

Ray Williams (M.A. Art history, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill; Ed.M. Harvard Graduate School of Education) is currently head of education at the Smithsonian's Freer and Sackler Galleries, which comprise the national museum of Asian art in Washington, DC. His work there has focused on engaging Asian American communities in various museum projects. Previously he served as the founding director of the "Five Faiths Project," based at the University of North Carolina's Ackland Art Museum. This project draws on ritual objects, religious stories, and documentary photographs made by insiders in five minority religious communities to teach about world religions. In the spring of 2000, Williams was a guest scholar at the Getty Museum, working on social and emotional learning in museums and documenting the Five Faiths Project as a possible model for art museums with an interest in addressing societal issues. A frequent presenter at the National Art Education Association's annual conference, Williams was named National Art Museum Educator of 1997 by that organization.
