YORK UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR TO BE HONOURED FOR INTERNATIONAL
WORK
TORONTO, January 22, 1996: Patricia Stamp, a professor of social
science at York University, will be honoured by the International Development
Research Centre for her work in gender and development research in the Third
World.
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) is celebrating its
25 anniversary this year and is recognizing the work of scientists and researchers
from developing countries through events at Canadian embassies abroad. The
IDRC is a crown corporation created in 1970 by the Parliament of Canada
to assist developing countries in finding their own solutions to development
problems through research.
Patricia Stamp will be honoured at a reception on Thursday, Jan. 25 at 4:30
p.m. at the York University bookstore in the York Lanes mall. The Honourable
Art Eggleton, MP (York Centre), who represents York University's riding,
will present a certificate on behalf of the Government of Canada and IDRC
from Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. A reception will follow.
Stamp is one of five Canadians to receive certificates in recognition of
her efforts to foster increased understanding between the West and developing
countries. She will also receive two books published by the IDRC celebrating
the achievements of researchers from the Third World. Her work is highlighted
in a chapter of one of those books.
Stamp is a professor and author whose work has helped to improve our understanding
of Africa, and particularly African women. She continues to promote greater
collaboration between researchers in the West and the Third World.
She has travelled through Africa and Asia as part of her research into the
area of gender and development. In 1991, she founded York's Development
Studies Resource Centre. She is also a founding member of the Women's Studies
program and African Studies program at York University, which were both
established in the early 1970s. Currently a social science professor at
York, she is also affiliated with three graduate studies programs: social
and political thought, political science, and women's studies.
York University, the third largest university in Canada, is nationally and
internationally respected for its innovative research and teaching. With
its combination of dedicated and talented faculty, bright and ambitious
students, dynamic curriculum and modern campus in the heart of one of North
America's most influential centres, York University is setting the modern
