Sample of Women Researched

Gray appears to apply the standpoint feminist theory through her choice of studying only women and her sample selection process. Her sample focuses on white women who lived with or were married to a male partner, and have a full time employment. Among her sample, she takes a couple of outstanding cases in which she includes a widow living with her teenage son and daughters and two young single women living with their parents. She chooses this in order to investigate women with different living arrangements and also to demonstrate her study focuses on younger women. All the women in her study share the same ethnic background for two reasons, one being that given a standard background, how factors such as age, class, and employment crossed gender within a broadly culturally homogeneous group. The other reason indicating the relationship between the researcher and the researched would allow for each to relate with one another knowing they have some similarities. She also managed to choose her group to not only be major users of the VCR, but also a group that is socially positioned as a family.
