York University researchers delve into the trust differences between generations<\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

TORONTO, June 27, 2022<\/strong> \u2013 A new study by York University researchers finds the Quiet Revolution in Quebec had a strong influence on how trusting Quebecers are of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assistant Professor Cary Wu<\/a> of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, and Associate Professor Andrew Dawson<\/a>, chair of the Department of Sociology at York\u2019s Glendon College, examined the impact of the Quiet Revolution on levels of trust for people born during and after this time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the researchers compared the trust levels of those born prior to the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s to those born after 1960, they found a significant difference in social trust levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Older generations of Quebecers socialized prior to the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s are significantly less trusting compared to those born in the province after 1960,\" says Wu. \"Usually, older generations are more trusting than young ones, but in this case it's the opposite.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Quiet Revolution had a significant impact on culture and religion and diminished the influence of the Catholic church on subsequent generations. This influence is seen in the varying levels of trust between generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe findings suggest that the modernization and secularization brought on by the Quiet Revolution has generated a long-term positive impact on trust,\u201d says Dawson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, when the researchers controlled for religious beliefs and modernization, they discovered younger Quebecers, like their counterparts elsewhere, are actually less trusting than older generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Quebec has been shown to have a consistently low level of social trust. In the 2013 Canadian General Social Survey (CGSS) by Statistics Canada, only 35 per cent of Quebecers said they had trust in most people. In the rest of Canada, 65 per cent had trust in others. For this study, the researchers analyzed data from the CGSS from 2003, 2008 and 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"This general lack of social trust may have been transferred from older generations, from prior to the Quiet Revolution, to subsequent generations,\" says Dawson, \"but there is reason to believe those younger generations are gradually becoming more trusting.\"<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The paper<\/a> was published in the journal of Canadian Review of Sociology<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

TORONTO, le 27 juin 2022<\/strong> - Une nouvelle \u00e9tude men\u00e9e par des chercheurs de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 York r\u00e9v\u00e8le que la R\u00e9volution tranquille au Qu\u00e9bec a eu une forte influence sur la confiance que les Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois et Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coises ont les uns envers les autres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Le professeur adjoint Cary Wu<\/a> de la Facult\u00e9 d\u2019arts lib\u00e9raux et \u00e9tudes professionnelles, et le professeur agr\u00e9g\u00e9 Andrew Dawson<\/a> directeur du D\u00e9partement de sociologie du Coll\u00e8ge universitaire Glendon, ont examin\u00e9 l\u2019impact de la R\u00e9volution tranquille sur les niveaux de confiance des personnes n\u00e9es pendant et apr\u00e8s cette p\u00e9riode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab Les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes de Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois et Qu\u00e9b\u00e9coises socialis\u00e9s avant la R\u00e9volution tranquille des ann\u00e9es 1960 sont nettement moins confiantes que celles n\u00e9es dans la province apr\u00e8s 1960, explique le professeur Wu. Habituellement, les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes font plus confiance que les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations nouvelles, mais dans ce cas, c\u2019est le contraire. \u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La R\u00e9volution tranquille a eu une incidence consid\u00e9rable sur la culture et la religion et a diminu\u00e9 l\u2019influence de l\u2019\u00e9glise catholique sur les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations suivantes. Cette influence se traduit par des niveaux de confiance variables entre les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cependant, lorsque les chercheurs ont pris en compte les croyances religieuses et la modernisation, ils ont d\u00e9couvert que les jeunes Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois, comme leurs homologues d\u2019ailleurs, sont en fait moins confiants que les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations pr\u00e9c\u00e9dentes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans l\u2019ensemble, il a \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9montr\u00e9 que le Qu\u00e9bec a un niveau de confiance sociale uniform\u00e9ment faible. Selon l\u2019Enqu\u00eate sociale g\u00e9n\u00e9rale canadienne (ESGC) r\u00e9alis\u00e9e par Statistique Canada en 2013, 35 % seulement des Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois avaient confiance en la plupart des gens. Dans le reste du Canada, 65 % avaient confiance en d\u2019autres personnes. Pour cette \u00e9tude, les chercheurs ont analys\u00e9 les donn\u00e9es des ESGC de 2003, 2008 et 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
