World Autism Awareness Day, on April 2, 2019, provides an opportunity to improve understanding of the issues that surround the autism community.<\/p>\n<p>Recent statistics show <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismontario.com\/what-autism\/prevalence-rates\">1-2% of the Canadian population is affected by autism spectrum disorder<\/a>, indicating that<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismontario.com\/what-autism\/prevalence-rates\">approximately 135,000 Ontarians\u00a0<\/a>are on the autism spectrum. Research can play a big role in understanding the causes and effects of autism and making sure that Canadians who are affected, and their families, receive the best possible support.<\/p>\n<p>The following York University experts are available to speak about the role of their research in the autism community:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/experts\/?name_or_keyword=weiss&amp;research_area=&amp;submit=Search+the+Guide&amp;search=Y\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10728\" src=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/Weiss_photo-294x300-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Jonathan Weiss\u00a0<\/a><\/strong>is an associate professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health and Research Chair in Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disability Mental Health at York University<\/p>\n<p>He can offer insight on the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The impact parents have and why parents who are partners in therapy with their children experience improvements in their own depression and emotion regulation<\/li>\n<li>The role of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and how it can help children with autism manage not only anxiety but other emotional challenges, such as sadness and anger<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-10296\" src=\"http:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/Perry-Portrait-1-e14122760001581-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Adrienne Perry<\/strong>\u00a0is a\u00a0professor in the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Health, at York University.\u00a0\u00a0She is a\u00a0clinical psychologist and board-certified behaviour analyst with over 30 years experience in autism diagnosis, treatment, and research.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0can offer insight on:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How is autism currently assessed and diagnosed?<\/li>\n<li>Why is autism considered a \"spectrum\" and how does it relate to developmental disabilities?<\/li>\n<li>How is the well-being of parents of children with autism affected?<\/li>\n<li>What current research shows about the evidence-base for applied behaviour analysis (ABA) and\u00a0intensive behavioural intervention (IBI)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>York University champions new ways of thinking that drive teaching and research excellence.
