{"id":16455,"date":"2021-07-30T09:09:57","date_gmt":"2021-07-30T13:09:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/?p=16395"},"modified":"2023-06-14T10:33:57","modified_gmt":"2023-06-14T14:33:57","slug":"can-ontario-avoid-a-fourth-wave-of-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2021\/07\/30\/can-ontario-avoid-a-fourth-wave-of-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Can Ontario avoid a fourth wave of COVID-19?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p><strong>TORONTO, July 30, 2021<\/strong> \u2013 In exploring what needed to happen to prevent a third wave of COVID-19 in Ontario, York University researchers say the same principals apply to preventing a fourth wave \u2013 adequate testing, contact tracing and isolation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11770\" src=\"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/files\/Jianhong-Wu-1-400x600.jpg\" alt=\"photo of professor Jianhong Wu\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>\u201cThese measures are even more crucial given the predominance of the highly transmissible Delta variant,\u201d says lead researcher Distinguished Research Professor Jianhong Wu of York\u2019s Faculty of Science. \u201cHad there been more testing, contact tracing and isolation after the second wave, Ontario may have been able to avoid a third wave. Now we have a very narrow window in which to prevent a fourth wave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The province needs to enhance its testing-to-tracing and tracing-to-quarantine\/isolation to avoid a possible fourth wave. This is feasible even with the circulation of the Delta variant.<\/p>\n<p>About 60 per cent of all new infections need to be traced and isolated, while for symptomatic individuals, 65 per cent should be tested and isolated. If only about 45 per cent of symptomatic people are diagnosed, then 75 per cent of new infections would need to be traced and isolated to avoid a fourth wave.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/reports-publications\/canada-communicable-disease-report-ccdr\/monthly-issue\/2021-47\/issue-7-8-july-august-2021\/covid-19-variants.html\">paper<\/a>, \u201cA window of opportunity for intensifying testing and tracing efforts to prevent new COVID-19 outbreaks due to more transmissible variants,\u201d was published in the current issue of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/reports-publications\/canada-communicable-disease-report-ccdr.html\">Canada Communicable Disease Report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About York University<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/\"><em>York University<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0is a modern,\u00a0multi-campus, urban university located in Toronto, Ontario.
