{"id":16803,"date":"2023-04-28T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-28T16:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/?p=16803"},"modified":"2023-10-01T23:28:41","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T03:28:41","slug":"york-university-leads-groundbreaking-research-to-ensure-technology-revolution-leaves-no-one-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/04\/28\/york-university-leads-groundbreaking-research-to-ensure-technology-revolution-leaves-no-one-behind\/","title":{"rendered":"York University leads groundbreaking research to ensure technology revolution leaves no one behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p><em>$318-million Connected Minds initiative to bring equity and inclusion to murky waters of AI<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>April 28, 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2023\/04\/28\/york-university-leads-318-4m-first-of-kind-inclusive-next-gen-technology-research-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">massive seven-year interdisciplinary research initiative<\/a> led by York University \u2013 backed by substantial federal research funding \u2014 is setting out to tame the unruly world of AI and other disruptive technologies, so humans can benefit equitably from advances in a machine-driven world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with marvellous innovations in medicine, education and entertainment, rapidly emerging technological advancements are also delivering unintended consequences, and some communities are being left behind. Making sure everyone benefits from the technological boom reflects York\u2019s signature mission to create positive change in the world, both locally and globally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to slow progress in technology, but rather, work together to be more thoughtful about the consequences \u2013 and try to mitigate the negative outcomes and optimize the positive ones,\u201d says Doug Crawford, a York University Distinguished Research Professor in Neuroscience who is the inaugural scientific director of the first-of-its-kind enterprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/research\/connected-minds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Connected Minds project<\/a> will bring together experts from York University\u00a0and Queen\u2019s University\u00a0who are working across\u00a0many different\u00a0fields including liberal arts, engineering, health,\u00a0law,\u00a0life sciences, and the arts\u00a0to develop a\u00a0framework\u00a0to guide future innovations in technology with a\u00a0focus on\u00a0inclusivity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet the minds behind Connected Minds\" width=\"1778\" height=\"1000\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WLn7IpjUNMQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReceiving this second CFREF award in the last two competitions reflects York\u2019s leadership as a research-intensive university that from its inception has understood the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in tackling complex, global problems. Connected Minds is particularly timely as we consider the implications of AI for creating a more equitable and inclusive world,\u201d says York president and vice-chancellor Rhonda Lenton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The researchers say putting some parameters around technological disruption would avoid the type of headline-grabbing pitfalls experienced by the AI text generator ChatGPT, almost as soon as it hit the market. Guidelines would also ensure underrepresented groups could enjoy the benefits of our shifting and evolving technologies and play a role in their creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYork is an international leader in interdisciplinary research. The federal government\u2019s substantial investment will unite York\u2019s incredible strengths with Queen\u2019s health specialties to chart new territory in socially responsible research for a rapidly changing digital world,\u201d says Amir Asif, York University\u2019s vice-president research and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a changing society with increasing intermingling between humans and machines and a host of different technologies,\u201d says Pina D\u2019Agostino, vice director and founder of York University\u2019s IP Innovation Clinic at Osgoode Hall Law School and vice-director of Connected Minds. \u201cThe social framework \u2013 the law \u2013 hasn\u2019t kept pace. What we\u2019re trying to do is develop technologies and frameworks that are socially responsible before they are disseminated in society, so we get ahead of the biases that may arise. That way underrepresented communities don\u2019t get sidelined as technologies progress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative\u2019s equity focus will be applied to many projects that are already underway at the two universities, and also to the issue of Indigenous data sovereignty. Through an Indigenous Advisory Circle and partners, researchers hope to explore a framework for use of Indigenous Peoples\u2019 data in a digital environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur work will seek to address the unexpected consequences of technological innovation, like the growing digital divide between broader society and Indigenous Peoples in terms of access to internet and also the colonization of it as well,\u201d says Sean Hillier, associate director of York University\u2019s Centre for Indigenous Knowledges &amp; Language and associate director of Connected Minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe continue to see researchers in Indigenous communities saying, \u2018how do we implement ownership, access, control and possession of our knowledge in a virtual world?\u2019 We don\u2019t have the capacity to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, more than 50 community groups are stepping up to engage in the research, a signal that the initiative is tapping into a recognized need. The City of Vaughan, for example, has contributed $36 million in land. Mitacs, which funds research and innovation, has contributed $1 million for internships and trainees. The Baycrest Health Centre \u2013 Rotman Research Institute, which studies aging and the human brain, is giving $2 million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Potential projects include explorations into a more inclusive metaverse, virtual reality and community organizing, technologies for healthy aging and how the human brain functions when people interact with AI versus each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to figure out the way machines work, but we also need to understand the way the human brain works,\u201d explains D\u2019Agostino. \u201cThat\u2019s the secret sauce in the machines and the technology. As we try and blossom machines, we have to link them up to the way we think. Something like empathy, for instance, will they ever have that?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another project is an Indigenous online gaming metaverse in which Indigenous Peoples can learn traditional language and gaming at the same time by engaging in land-based learning that recognizes the physical, mental, and spiritual connection to the land that is part of Indigenous identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hope that with our checklist, anytime someone innovates they won\u2019t only think from a mainstream perspective,\u201d says D\u2019Agostino.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technological disruption is only going to grow, adds Crawford, and it\u2019s not too late to create guidelines to shape the future in a way that incorporates the values of equity, diversity and inclusivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHere at York and at Queen\u2019s, we have engineers and scientists involved in a number of technologies, some of them related to health, transportation, communications and computer vision,\u201d Crawford notes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe hope to bring this new perspective to that. The other part is developing the paradigm. If we are successful in that approach, then the aim is to beta test here at York and Queen\u2019s and have a broader effect on the way research is done in Canada and the world,\u201d he concludes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newswire.ca\/news-releases\/government-of-canada-invests-1-4-billion-in-strategic-research-at-postsecondary-institutions-811647722.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The CFREF&nbsp;grant&nbsp;of $105.6 million dollars <\/a>when combined with the contributions from multi-sector partners, municipal governments, and collaborating partners is valued at $318.4 million, making Connected Minds&nbsp;the&nbsp;biggest York-led research program in the University\u2019s history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connected Minds will
