{"id":1954,"date":"2022-10-06T10:05:44","date_gmt":"2022-10-06T14:05:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/?p=1954"},"modified":"2023-09-07T16:34:21","modified_gmt":"2023-09-07T20:34:21","slug":"intercultural-romantic-relationships-aid-personal-growth-york-u-researcher-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/2022\/10\/06\/intercultural-romantic-relationships-aid-personal-growth-york-u-researcher-says\/","title":{"rendered":"Intercultural romantic relationships aid personal growth, York U researcher says"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div>\n<p><em>Research by Social Psychologist Amy Muise and her team offers first look at how cultural differences can facilitate personal growth and relationship success<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2022\/10\/amym-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1961\" width=\"167\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2022\/10\/amym-1.jpg 636w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2022\/10\/amym-1-223x300.jpg 223w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><figcaption><em>York U Social Psychologist <a href=\"https:\/\/health.yorku.ca\/health-profiles\/?dept&amp;mid=1456353\">Professor Amy Muise<\/a>  <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>TORONTO, Oct. 6, 2022<\/strong> \u2013 Couples in intercultural romantic relationships benefit from each other\u2019s cultural differences, as they are exposed to new perspectives, knowledge and identities, three recent studies conducted by York University researchers indicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIntercultural romantic relationships are increasingly common and although the obstacles such couples face are well-documented, the factors that facilitate their success are less studied,\u201d says Social Psychologist, <a href=\"https:\/\/health.yorku.ca\/health-profiles\/?dept&amp;mid=1456353\">Professor Amy Muise<\/a> in the Faculty of Health at York University, who is the senior author of a new paper. \u201cOur current study results show that personal growth was associated with relationship quality and identity outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/01461672221121508\">\u201cGrowing Together Through our Cultural Differences: Self-expansion in Intercultural Romantic Relationships,<\/a><a><\/a>\u201d &nbsp;published today in <em>Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin<\/em>, is a research paper based on studies using cross-sectional, dyadic, over time, and experimental methods to understand the opportunities for growth through cultural sharing in a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The studies indicate that personal growth through a partner\u2019s culture was uniquely related to identity outcomes, such as a greater cultural awareness, beyond general growth through the relationship. \u201cAlso, actively sharing cultures and discussing their differences was linked to more cultural and relational self-expansion, which in turn, differentially predicted partners\u2019 relationship quality and cultural identities,\u201d points out Muise, who is also the York Research Chair in Relationships and Sexuality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These studies provide a first look at the role of self-expansion in intercultural relationships \u2013 demonstrating that the way couples negotiate their cultures is linked to both relational and personal outcomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">-30-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/\"><em>York University<\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;is a modern, multi-campus, urban university located in Toronto, Ontario.
