According to the United Nations, pollinators contribute directly to food security and are needed to pollinate some 75 per cent of food crops worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the Greater Toronto Area, there are more than 350 native bee species with about 1,000 across the country \u2013 many of which are wild bees, compared to managed honeybees - which depend on natural and diverse green areas, as well as floral gardens to sustain their populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWild native bees and other pollinators are often overlooked as honeybees often steal the spotlight, but native bees are incredibly important and are facing increasing threats from changing land use, pesticides and disease,\u201d says York Research Chair in Behavioural Genetics <a href=\"https:\/\/news.yorku.ca\/experts\/?name_or_keyword=sandra+rehan&amp;research_area=&amp;submit=Search+the+Guide&amp;search=Y\"><strong>Sandra Rehan<\/strong><\/a>, director of York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/bees\/\">Centre for Bee Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation<\/a> (BEEC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many ways people and communities can help support our wild bees by planting native plants and flowers which bloom at different times during the season and being careful not to destroy wild bee habitats during spring clean-up,\u201d says Rehan.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2025\/05\/unknown-date-dsc_0160-Culvers-Root-and-Bumble-bee.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22225\" style=\"width:401px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2025\/05\/unknown-date-dsc_0160-Culvers-Root-and-Bumble-bee.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/242\/2025\/05\/unknown-date-dsc_0160-Culvers-Root-and-Bumble-bee-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Culvers Root with a visiting bumble bee<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Every year, BEEc and the Faculty of Environmental and Urban Change (EUC) hosts a <strong>Garden Party for bees<\/strong>, where volunteers prune, weed, mulch and revitalize the University\u2019s native plant garden, while being careful not to disrupt ground-nesting bee habits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A way to celebrate and support bees and other pollinators, sponsored in part by World Wildlife Fund Canada, the <a href=\"https:\/\/events.yorku.ca\/events\/centre-for-bee-ecology-evolution-and-conservation-hosts-garden-party-for-world-bee-day\/\">Garden Party<\/a> will take place on Tuesday, May 20, from&nbsp;2 to 5 p.m. <strong>Media are invited.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Examples of bee species that visit the EUC Native Plant Garden include Toronto's official bee \u2013 the green metallic sweat bee <em>Agapostemon virescens \u2013<\/em> as well as tiny, smooth, black solitary bees that can be mistaken for flies or ants, and fuzzy bumblebees, whose queens are easily seen this time of year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the main goals of the garden party is to get as many people involved and learning about native plantings, especially native plants to help our local native pollinators,\u201d says Katherine Chau, BEEc coordinator and York Postdoctoral Fellow in the Rehan bee lab.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BEEc\u2019s bee researchers can help better understand bees, the risks to their health, habitats, behaviour, genetics and diseases, and what people can do to help.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Have some buzzworthy questions?
