Until now, Canadian investors have not had a place to go for free legal advice; the Investor Protection Clinic fills this void.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clinic provides legal advice to people who believe they have suffered an investment loss as a result of someone else\u2019s wrongdoing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Investor Protection Clinic also functions as a research lab, collecting data in an anonymized way that will be used for research purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-1 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.3%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large img-thumbnail rounded-0\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-950986656-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-950986656-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-950986656-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-950986656-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-950986656-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.6%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Issues:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My advisor:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Misrepresented the <strong>risk of the investments <\/strong>he\/she put me in;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Used my <strong>funds in ways that I was unaware<\/strong> of;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Is charging me f<strong>ees tha<\/strong>t <strong>were not explained<\/strong> to me;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>made too many trades, resulting in high commissions or trading fees; and,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>signed forms on my behalf without my permission.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-2 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Can Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clinic may be able to assist you by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>writing a complaint letter on your behalf to the company or the regulator;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>giving you options on how to proceed with your issues; and\/or,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>representing you in a legal proceeding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Clinic is unable to help you with losses that occurred as a result of market forces and risks inherent in investing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large img-thumbnail rounded-0 is-style-default\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"593\" src=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-1024x593.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-1024x593.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-400x231.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.yorku.ca\/osgoode\/ipc\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/594\/2022\/09\/iStock-1536x889.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Clinic is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ciro.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osc.ca\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ontario Securities Commission<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lawfoundation.on.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Law Foundation of Ontario<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Welcome The Investor Protection Clinic at Osgoode Hall Law School provides free legal advice to people who believe their investments were mishandled and who cannot afford a lawyer.
