The Conservative government may choose to re-appoint her and Stoddart has indicated she would accept the appointment if it were offered. However, the Vancouver Sun is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vancouversun.com\/technology\/Privacy+commissioner+fate\/3496948\/story.html\">reporting<\/a> that it\u2019s uncertain whether they will, given their recent decisions not to renew the appointments of several other government officials.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>During Stoddart\u2019s seven year term the profile of the Privacy Commissioner\u2019s office was raised significantly, a result at least partially attributable to her public image as an ardent advocate for online privacy. In 2009, her office\u2019s investigation and subsequent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/cf-dc\/2009\/2009_008_0716_e.cfm\">report<\/a> on Facebook\u2019s privacy policies made headlines and were a resounding <a href=\"http:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/media\/nr-c\/2009\/nr-c_090827_e.cfm\">success<\/a>. In January of this year, following up on a new complaint, another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/media\/nr-c\/2010\/nr-c_100127_e.cfm\">probe<\/a> into the social networking giant was launched. An announcement concerning this investigation is expected shortly. Stoddart also became known internationally following her outspoken criticism of the manner in which Google released their social networking tool <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/8632517.stm\">Buzz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under Stoddart, the Privacy Commissioner\u2019s office also embraced their mandate to raise public awareness of privacy issues. Over the last year the office held a series of public consultations in cities across to Canada, with the stated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.priv.gc.ca\/resource\/consultations\/index_e.cfm\">goal<\/a> of promoting debate \u201cabout the impact of these technological developments on privacy\u201d . Additionally, the PrivacyComm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/PrivacyComm\">YouTube channel <\/a> contains 49 videos relating to privacy issues, aimed at audiences ranging from children and teenagers to business owners.<\/p>\n<p>Technology is making privacy concerns more palpable worldwide. Last week, an IPilogue post <a href=\"..\/2010\/09\/job-hunt-due-diligence-a-two-way-street\/\">evaluated<\/a> contemporary German approaches to privacy concerns, discussing a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/26\/business\/global\/26fbook.html?_r=3&amp;src=twt&amp;twt=nytimes\">bill<\/a> that would prohibit employers from investigating potential employees through social networking sites, and the effects of the nation\u2019s strong <a href=\"http:\/\/www.globalpost.com\/dispatch\/germany\/100818\/google-street-view?page=0,1\">reaction<\/a> to Google Street View. A second post <a href=\"..\/2010\/09\/reconsidering-driveway-privacy\/\">scrutinized<\/a> the North American privacy-law-enforcement nexus.
