The Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region is located in southeastern France. Its southern section edges into Provence and goes by the name of Dr\u00f4me Proven\u00e7ale, but the region also has an extinct volcano area in green Auvergne, has a bit of a Swiss flavour (Lake Geneva laps the shores of Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes as well as Switzerland), and an Italian influence is evident in Savoie and Haute-Savoie. The Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes region originated from the fusion between the former regions of Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes and Auvergne in 2016, during the overall reshaping of France\u2019s regions.<\/p>\n\n\n

Beaujolais Nouveau, the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, haute cuisine, sausages, famous restaurants, Paul Bocuse, the Rh\u00f4ne Valley, St. Exup\u00e9ry’s ageless Petit Prince, the Alps, the Mont-Blanc tunnel, Evian water, ski resorts like Chamonix, M\u00e9g\u00e8ve, La Clusaz, Val d’is\u00e8re, La Plagne and Courcheval, the 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics, the Alvoriaz Fantasy Film Festival, Lake Annecy, silk, Guignol, Stendhal and his famous \u201cThe Red and the Black\u201d, “Oh time, suspend your flight!” \u2014 Lamartine’s cry at the edge of Lake Bourget, Aventis, the Vercors and the French resistance with Jean Moulin, Hewlett Packard. You\u2019ve no doubt heard of everything on this list. Well, believe it or not, it all belongs to Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there\u2019s much more to discover! The three hills of Lyon (the hill that prays, the hill that works and the hill that thinks), the Rh\u00f4ne and Sa\u00f4ne rivers that converge to form a peninsula in the heart of Lyon, the Museum of Modern Art in Saint-Etienne, dumplings, fine wines from C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne, the December 8 Festival of Light, lavender, Beaufort cheese, the Chartreuse Mountains, Aix-les-Bains, white Charolais cattle, T\u00eate d\u2019or Park, baroque churches in Tarantaize Valley, Mont\u00e9limar nougat and so much more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re from Ontario, why would you choose to study in Lyon, Chamb\u00e9ry or Saint-\u00c9tienne? First of all, the consortium\u2019s universities and grandes \u00e9coles offer many attractive features. Whether you want a great environment, amazing location, superior curriculum or all three combined, they have what you\u2019re looking for. Second, they have special International Relations Offices well equipped to welcome thousands of foreign students from around the world. Chamb\u00e9ry, which holds the region\u2019s record with close to 10% of its student body from abroad, ranks among the best in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the Lyon sites are located in the city centre and are easily accessible by public transit. Lyon has a combination of subway, trams, buses, rental bikes and scooters, and even a shuttle boat! Lyon 3\u2019s new site, a former tobacco factory, has been completely renovated. The original structure remains intact, but the glass arcades that connect the various buildings give it a distinctly modern touch.<\/p>\n\n\n

Three academic sites make up the University of Chamb\u00e9ry in the heart of Savoie, not far from several ski resorts. The third is actually in Haute-Savoie, in Annecy-le-Vieux. Interestingly, the two Chamb\u00e9ry sites are quite different one from the other. The downtown site resembles a mountainside chalet, while the other, on the banks of Lake Bourget, has its feet in the water and its face turned to the mountain sun. Last but not least, Saint-Etienne, the link between Lyon and the Auvergne, built itself a modern, medium-sized university that has become the heart of the city. While known as an industrial town, the warmth and generosity of Saint-\u00c9tienne\u2019s inhabitants serve as a strong attraction for foreign students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Above all, don\u2019t assume that the study abroad is reserved for literature and language students. You can study almost everything: natural sciences, social sciences, politics, economics, law, arts, literature, fine arts, and every engineering specialization. The only exception is medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
