Important update regarding leadership within the University Secretariat

Dear colleagues,

I am writing to share an important update regarding leadership within the University Secretariat.

Sarah Wiley‑Thomas has advised me of her decision to step down from her role as University Secretary, effective April 12, 2026. I want to express my deepest thanks to Sarah for her truly exceptional service to York University. Through her calm leadership and principled stewardship of our governance framework, she has strengthened the work of both Senate and the Board of Governors and has been a trusted advisor to me, our chairs, and senior leaders across the university.

As we thank Sarah for her contributions, I also want to assure you that continuity, stability, and care remain our guiding priorities. To support a smooth transition, the responsibilities of the University Secretary role will be assumed through a shared model for the remainder of this academic year and the next year:

In addition to her role as General Counsel, Christine Silversides will serve as University Secretary (Board), supporting the Board of Governors and its committees, overseeing corporate records and Board governance processes, and jointly managing the Office of the University Secretariat.

Leanne De Filippis will now serve as University Secretary (Senate) and Associate General Counsel, providing support for Senate and its committees, stewarding academic governance processes, and jointly managing the Office of the University Secretariat alongside her duties in the Counsel’s office.

This shared approach reflects the distinct responsibilities of Senate and Board governance while ensuring close collaboration, reciprocal support, and seamless continuity across the Secretariat’s work. Our governance operations will continue without interruption, supported by an experienced and deeply committed team.

I am deeply grateful to Leanne and Christine for stepping into these roles, and I want to thank the entire Secretariat team for their professionalism, dedication, and steady leadership during this period of transition.

With appreciation,

Lisa Philipps
